Lettuce is one of the easiest garden crops to grow. The real challenge is staggering smaller plantings so fresh heads are always developing. Frequent, small sowings work best, and lettuce can be planted in a wide variety of spots throughout the garden, making it a flexible and reliable choice for continuous harvests.

- Planting: Lettuce is a cool‑weather crop. In mild climates, seeds can be sown directly in the garden in late winter or early spring, and again in the fall. For a continuous supply of fresh heads, sow seed every 2 weeks
- Care: Thin plants when they reach 2 inches high to allow proper spacing and healthy growth. Apply mulch to help keep the soil cool and retain moisture. Water frequently but lightly to maintain even moisture without saturating the soil. Fertilize with a 10-10-10 or similar fertilizer.
- Harvest: This lettuce is ready to harvest when the leaves reach 8–10 inches tall and form a compact base about 4 inches wide. At this stage, the leaves are tender, flavorful, and ideal for fresh use.
