Collection: Tall Fescue
Tall Fescue is a perennial, cool season bunch grass. It is native to Europe but has become naturalized in the United States since its introduction in the 1800s. It was, and still is, used as a pasture grass until varieties were developed in the 1980s that were more suitable for use as a turfgrass, hence the name “Turf-Type Tall Fescue.”
Over the years new varieties have been developed and introduced that exhibit excellent turf quality. While tall fescues do not reach the level of turf quality as Kentucky Bluegrass they are easier to establish and maintain, have greater heat and drought tolerance, and are better adapted to a wide range of climates from Canada to Florida and across midwestern and southern states to the west coast. Compared to other cool season grasses (Kentucky Bluegrass, Perennial Ryegrass, Fine Fescue) Tall Fescues have a coarser leaf blade and a deeper, more extensive root system (2-3 feet deep).
