Alyssum Carpet of Snow / Sweet Alyssum
With vivid white, tiny, and abundant flowers plus a low, spreading form, "Carpet of Snow" is a descriptive name! It's also known as "Sweet Alyssum" because of its pleasing fragrance that attracts butterflies and pollinators.
Alyssum is perfect for coastal gardens as it tolerates wind and salt spray. Perfect as a garden ground cover, it can also grow from cracks in stone walls, or between boulders in rock gardens.
Sweet Alyssum is frost sensitive but prefers cooler weather as opposed to extreme heat. Carpet of Snow is fast and easy to grow from seeds along walkways or at the front of a border. Or let it trail from a hanging basket packed with cheery purple and yellow Johnny Jump-Ups (Viola cornuta).
Plants grow 8 to 10 inches high and spread 12 inches wide.
