Carrots grow well in nearly any garden, regardless of soil type, but choosing the right variety makes all the difference. Little Finger is a petite gourmet carrot that reaches about 3 inches long, making it especially well‑suited to light, loose soils and container gardening. Its small size and tender texture make it an excellent choice for fresh eating and specialty dishes.

- Planting: Carrots are a cool‑season crop that germinate best in cool, moist soil during late winter and early spring. Before planting, mix 1 pound of 5‑10‑10 fertilizer (or equivalent) into every 50 square feet of soil. Avoid high‑nitrogen fertilizers or uncomposted manure, which can cause forked or misshapen roots. For a prolonged harvest, stagger plantings every 2–3 weeks throughout the cool season.
- Care: Carrot seeds require consistently moist soil to germinate. Once seedlings reach 3 inches tall, thin them to 2–3 inches apart to allow proper root development. When plants reach 6 inches tall, apply fertilizer again and cover the soil with organic mulch to protect developing roots and prevent cracking. Maintain even moisture but avoid overwatering.
- Harvest: Pull carrots when the roots are 2–3 inches long and still tender for the best flavor and texture. Before harvesting, drench the bed with water to loosen the soil and make lifting the roots easier.
